Autograph Manuscript Poem "Flower in the crannied wall".
n.p.: n.d.; written in 1868, probably copied c. 1870-1880]. (7 3/4 x 5 1/2 in; 200 x 140 mm). One 8vo. page. Mourning borders, written across a sheet of stationary with “Farringford, Freshwater, Isle of Wight” printed in black. [WITH:] Autograph inscription : “With Mr. Tennyson’s best regards, Jan 3rd. 77.” One 8vo. page. Written across a folded sheet of stationary with “Farringford, Freshwater, Isle of Wight” embossed. Both items in quarter brown morocco clamshell box, spine lettered in gilt. Condition : Ink smudging on one letter of manuscript (perhaps present during original composition); some rubbing to spine. penned lyrics of the celebrated poem that eventually appeared in Tennyson’s The Holy Grail and Other Poems : “Flower in the crannied wall, / -Have you here, root and all, in my hand, / Little flower, but if I could understand / What you are root and all, and all in all, / I should know what God and man is.
