[TENNIEL, John (1820-1914), illustrator]. Sir John Tenniel’s illustrations to Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass. London [and Oxfordshire: Jonathan Stephenson at The Rocket Press for] Macmillan, 1988. 3 volumes including text, royal 8vo. 91 engravings from the original wood blocks engraved by the Brothers Dalziel from drawings by Tenniel and one plate from an electrotype; each blindstamped and numbered in lower corner and individually laid in to printed folders; together in two original morocco-backed folding cases and housed in original cloth slipcase with text volume by Leo John de Freitas. Laid in with several preliminary announcements and prospectus booklets. LIMITED EDITION, number 65 of 250 copies on acid-free mould-made paper. “It was recently discovered that the original boxwood blocks upon which the designs were drawn and then engraved have not only survived but survived in good condition. The opportunity has therefore been taken to publish a limited number of sets of the illustrations pulled directly from the blocks as they stand today - over one hundred years since the engraver first laid his thumb against the side of the block and committed his burin to the beautiful yellow wood” (from the introduction).
