Taylor, ZacharyAutograph letter signed ("Z-Taylor") to Major General Thomas Jesup, suggesting a change in the plans of operations for the Florida campaign, Fort Basinger, 10 March 1838 3 1/5 pages, 4to (240 x 191 mm). Marked "Private" at top left, docketed in another hand on final lead; old folds. Bound with typed transcription, and tipped onto leaf. Antique-style three-quarter brown morocco and paper-covered boards, spine gilt-lettered. "... most truly do I regret the determination of the Govt. as regards the Indians communicated to Genl. Eustis by the Secy. of War, as I feel confident the most serious and unhappy results will grow out of said determination ..." With the Second Seminole War underway, Zachary Taylor was sent to Florida in 1837. While there, Taylor built Fort Gardiner and Fort Basinger, which served as supply depots and communication centers. The forts supported Major General Jesup’s campaign to lead forces into the Seminole territory with the aim of cornering the Seminoles, forcing them to fight or surrender. In this strategy, it would seem he was influenced by Taylor, who in the present letter advises: "the only means therefore left us to compel [the Seminoles] to comply with the wishes of the Govt. is to confine them to the swamps, & hammocks they are now occupying until diseas [sic] or the flies & mosquitoes drive them to the prairies or pine woods ..." In May 1838, Jesup stepped down, and placed Taylor in command of all American troops in Florida. Taylor served in this position for two years.
