TAYLOR, John, 'the Water Poet' (1580-1653). All the Workes. London: J[ohn] B[eale, Elizabeth Allde, Bernard Alsop, and Thomas Fawcet] for James Boler, 1630. 2° (284 x 190mm). Engraved frontispiece by T. Cockson, woodcut emblem on Aaa4v and Kkk4v, numerous woodcut portraits of English monarchs. (Without front blank, title lightly soiled, some light browning and spotting, burnhole in F4 affecting one letter, hole in Kk1 causing minor loss over two to three lines recto and verso.) Contemporary mottled calf, gilt rules, gilt spine with morocco label (joints cracked and rubbed, corners rubbed, small chip to fore-edge, inner hinges split). FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Having no grand patrons, Taylor pointedly dedicated his 63 works to the world, with dispirited comments on his failure to win recognition. 'It is typical that the same year that saw this bid for literary respectability also saw him devising a project to bring Nicholas Wood the Great Eater of Kent, to London and turn his gargantuan appetite into a money-raising venture by holding public performances at the Bear Garden' (ODNB). 'The Praise of Hemp Seed', p. 72, is a reference to Shakespeare and to Spenser. Pforzheimer 1006; STC 23725.
