TALMUD BAVLI. [Babylonian Talmud with commentary of Solomon ben Isaac (Rashi), with Tosafot, Piskei Tosafot, Talmudical compendium by Asher ben Jehiel, commentary of Moses Maimonides, supercommentary Chokhmat Shelomoh by Solomon ben Jehiel Luria, index of decisions En Mishpat and halakhic novellae by Joseph Karo]. Amsterdam: Immanoel Benveniste, 1644-1648. Printer's device on title of each tractate (2 or more to a volume) showing a tower flanked by a lion with a star superimposed (Yaari, Nos. 60, 61, p.38). 12 volumes, sm. folio, 265 x 200 mm., contemporary blind-tooled calf over wooden boards, restored, later endpapers, one cover grazed, metal catches, wanting most clasps, some spots and stains and a few manuscripts entries . The first Amsterdam edition. Vinograd, Amsterdam 87ff; Fuks 216; Steinschneider 1411; Rabbinovicz, Ma'amar al Hadpasat ha-Talmud, p. 93-95; Zedner 740. Printing the complete Babylonian Talmud was the most important and ambitious enterprise of the famous Amsterdam Hebrew printer Immanoel Benveniste. This edition was highly esteemed, because passages expurgated by censorship in previous editions were now restored. As there was no special censorship for printed books in the Dutch Republic, Benveniste's Talmud contains even the formerly deleted tractate Avodah Zarah (Idolatrous Worship) with all references to Christianity -- Another copy. 1 volume (of 12) only. 4to, contemporary vellum, rebacked, old spine laid down -- TALMUD BAVLI. Babylonischer Talmud. Tractat Berachoth [E.M. Pinner's translation of tractate Berakhot into German]. Berlin: n.p., 1842. One volume only. Folio, modern cloth, old spine laid down . (14)
