Synge met the Abbey Theater's leading lady Molly Allgood (stage name Maire O'Neill) at the Abbey Theater when he was 35 and she 19. The two fell in love and became engaged, by Synge's debilitating illness -- undiagnosed Hodgkin's disease -- prevented the marriage, and Synge died in 1909 at the age of 38. Allgood acted in many of Synge's plays, and continued to do so after his death.
