Sykes, John. LOCAL RECORDS OF NORTHUMBERLAND. A COLLECTION COMPRISING ONE MANUSCRIPT VOLUME AND 6 PRINTED VOLUMES, AS FOLLOWS: 1. Manuscript notes for ‘Local Records of Northumberland’, 4to, about 700 pages, comprising chronological notes of events in North East England between 795 and 1836, mostly dating after October 1832, followed by further unsorted notes, many on small slips of paper, some loose and others mounted, together with other related papers by Sykes, correspondence to Sykes providing additional material and corrections to his Local Records, press cuttings, and a small quantity of later correspondence (to the 1850s), tan calf by Waters, central panel in red morocco with gilt lettering, fraying to outer edges of many leaves Much of this collection comprises Sykes’s manuscript notes for a proposed continuation of his Local Records. An advertisement announcing this book is mounted at the beginning of the volume, and describes the forthcoming publication as providing “much curious early Information not before given, and Additions to Subjects already treated of, together with the Occurrences from the close of the Work in 1832, to the Period when the Third Volume shall be completed.” The third volume never appeared but Sykes’s manuscript notes for the years 1832-36 were used by Latimer in his continuation of Sykes. Included in this collection is Latimer’s letter to John Fenwick, then owner of the manuscript, returning it to him, dated 10 May 1856. 2. Local Records; or Historical Register of Remarkable Events which have occurred in Northumberland and Durham, Newcastle upon Tyne, and Berwick upon Tweed, from the earliest period of authentic record, to the present time. Newcastle, 1833-1857, 3 volumes extended to 6, 8vo (240 x 142mm.), extra-illustrated with approximately 611 prints, 2 pencil drawings and one watercolour, illustrations in text, vellum gilt by Waters, top edges gilt, others uncut Sykes' Local Records was published in 2 volumes. This is the second edition, extended to 4 volumes. In volume 1 of this copy is an autograph letter from Sykes to J. Brockett, a subscriber. A continuation for the years 1832-1857 was edited by John Latimer in one volume, here extended to 2.
