SWIFT, Jonathan (1667-1745)]. Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World ... by Lemuel Gulliver . London: Benj[amin] Motte, 1726. 2 volumes, 8 o (190 x 122 mm). Engraved frontispiece portrait of Gulliver and 6 plates. (Some very minor browning and occasional soiling, light offsetting from frontispiece onto title-page.) Modern brown morocco gilt, edges gilt, by Riviere. Provenance : Walter Thomas Wallace (bookplate). Second octavo edition, Teerink's AA edition (but with General title to volume two as in the B edition), with the frontispiece portrait of Gulliver in the second state (with the legend round the frame). Swift's work has long been considered the epitome of satirical fable writing and has also become a classic tale for children over the years. Written in Ireland, probably between 1720 and 1725, Swift brought the finished manuscript to England with him when he left Dublin for London in March 1726. As the time of publication approached, it was frequently discussed by his friends, but even after it appeared on 28 October 1726, Swift kept up the public pretense of having had no hand in it.
