SWEET, Robert (1783-1835). The Ornamental Flower Garden and Shrubbery . London: G.Willis, 1854. 4 volumes, 8° (250 x 150mm.). Half-title in vol.1. 288 hand-colored engraved plates (6 folding). (A few short marginal tears, some light spotting, plates in generally good condition.) Publisher’s gilt- and blind-stamped green cloth, edges gilt (rubbing and some wear, particularly to the extremities). Provenance : C.M. Faithfull (ownership inscription on flyleaves). A reissue of Sweet's British Flower-garden and Florist's Guide , with revised text. Plates after Sarah Anne Drake, E. Dalton Smith, William Herbert, and others, engraved by by Weddell, Bailey, Barclay and others. The title-page notes that the present work was “Selected from the works of John Lindley… R. Sweet… Professor D. Don, etc, to which are added English Descriptions…by a Practical Floriculturist.” Brunet 5180; Nissen BBI 1927 (calling for a different state of the title-page omitting Lindley’s name and describing descriptions by “an eminent floriculturist").
