SUPREME COURT]. Large group photograph signed by Chief Justice WARREN E. BURGER ("Warren E. Burger"), also signed by the EIGHT ASSOCIATE JUSTICES, Washington, D. C. n.d. [ca. 1975]. 15¼ x 21 in., including margins, in color . Signed by the justices along the lower margin. THE BURGER COURT STRKIES AN INFORMAL POSE: the justices appear not in black robes, but in business suits and blazers, leaning or sitting at a conference table in the Court's chamber. The usual protocol of seniority is disregarded as well. The Chief Justice stands third from right, instead of at the center. Each Justice has signed below their image (from left to right): JOHN PAUL STEVENS ("John Paul Stevens"), LEWIS POWELL ("Lewis F. Powell, Jr."), HARRY BLACKMUN ("Harry A. Blackmun"), WILLIAM REHNQUIST ("William H. Rehnquist"), THURGOOD MARSHALL ("Thurgood Marshall"), WILLIAM BRENNAN ("Wm. J. Brennan, Jr."), Burger, POTTER STEWART ("Potter Stewart"), and BYRON WHITE ("Byron R. White"). The most momentous case to come before Burger and his brethren was United States of America v. Richard M. Nixon . In late July 1974 the Court ruled 8-0 (Rehnquist recused himself as a former Nixon administration appointee) that Nixon had to turn over subpoenaed tapes to the Watergate Special Prosecutor. In the face of this resounding mandate, Nixon complied, and the incriminating content of those tapes forced his resignation just days later.
