Boston & New York: Houghton Mifflin, 1898-1916. 40 volumes including index. Frontispiece portraits and lithographed additional titles. 8vo. Period full burgundy morocco gilt, spines gilt in compartments, dentelles gilt, silk doublures. Original autograph material with some fold splitting and occasional fading (detailed list available on request); volume spines sunned, else fine. Extra-illustrated set of the large-paper, limited edition, the first series being no 459 of 500 sets. The 40 volumes comprise biographies of the most eminent Americans to date, from Benjamin Franklin and George Washington to William McKinley Bound in to the front of each volume (excepting the index) is a pertinent original signed document or letter, including those of 11 Presidents, Signers of the Declaration, members of the Continental Congress, Chief Justices, et al. DS ("B Franklin Presdt") as President of the Supreme Executive Council of Pennsylvania, Aug 17, 1787, recording a deposition of James Gottier on the bankruptcy of the Philadelphia trader, Jonathan Smith * ADAMS, SAMUEL. DS ("Samuel Adams") as Governor of Massachusetts, Feb 10, 1796, being the commission of Benjamin Willis as a Justice in Plymouth County. * WASHINGTON, GEORGE. LS ("G:Washington"), Jun 22, 1798, an order for brads. * ADAMS, JOHN. LS ("John Adams"), 2 pp, Mar 3, 1820, to William Cardell concerning a proposal for a Philological Academy. * HAMILTON, ALEXANDER. LS ("Alexander Hamilton") as Secretary of the Treasury, Jun 6, 1791 (letter cleanly split at folds including through signature). * MORRIS, GOUVERNEUR.
