SUNDMAN, GÖSTA - PALMÉN, J. A. Finska fogelägg. Suomen lintuin munia. Helsingfors u.å. (1879-88). Tv. 4:o. I-VIII, III-XIII (lacks halftitle), (1 blank), III-X (lacks halftitle), III-XI (lacks halftitlel), (1 blank), I-XVI pp. 25 coloured lith. plates (all, some pencil notations). Near contemporary brown half leather, somewhat worn, gilt spine in five compartments, marbled edges. (Bound by Hedberg). Bookplate of Nils Gyldenstolpe, his signature on first free endpaper. Nissen: IVB 903; Anker 491. Halftitles to part II-IV lacking as often. Lacks probably also an extra lithographed title (not mentioned in Nissen or Anker) This work is the first chromo-lithographic atlas published in Finland. It was issued in 9 parts between 1879-1888. The introduction to the work and the text to the plates were written by J. A. Palmén, but this text seems, as in the present copy, to have been interrupted after the issue of Part V. (Anker). Proveniens: Nils Carl Gustaf Fersen Gyldenstolpe (1886-1961), Swedish explorer , zoologist and ornithologist (taxonomy was Gyldenstolpe's main interest), "Lord of the Bedchamber" to king Gustaf V of Sweden, worked from 1914 on at the Swedish State Natural Hustory Museum. Scientific expeditions to Africa, Asia, and New Guinea. His main works are on birds from South America, the only continent he had not himself visited. Photo.
