Serigraph. 76 x 50.8 cm (30x20½"). No. 21 of 144. Signed by Chryssa at lower right. Chryssa Vardea-Mavromichali (1933–2013) was a Greek-American artist who pioneered the use of neon tubing in fine art sculpture and installation. As the New York Times obituary tells it "[I]n a midcentury urban epiphany, Chryssa realized that neon tubing — which had been the exclusive province of sign makers — could provide the marriage of text, color and illumination she craved. 'I saw Times Square with its light and letters,' she said afterward, 'and I realized it was as beautiful and difficult to do as Japanese calligraphy.'" - Margalit Fox, NYT 2014.
