STRANGE FANTASY No. 12 Author: Place: Publisher: Date: Description: Ajax-Farrell (Indicia: "Farrell Comics, Inc."). June-July, 1954. Fair-Good (1.5). Cover loose, spine 40% split. Otherwise, a VG-looking copy with off-white pages. Edited by Ruth Roche. Uncredited Iger Shop stories and art. A Viking vampire abducts a blonde, drinks her blood, makes her his slave. They shack up in a bizarro version of postwar domesticity, and the story ends with the vampire and his thrall planning all-out assault on Smalltown USA. Next comes "Terror Town," in which a giant quivering monkey brain invades the city, covering everything with its foul pulpy mass (a metaphor for the "ten cent plague" of horror comics?). An ad for anti-bedwetting pills offers the Superior reader a ray of hope, while substantiating pre-Code publishers' claims that grownups read their mags ("Adults: Start Living A Normal Life Tonight!"). A limited edition of 100 softcover and 15 hardcover catalogues are available. Over 200 pages, fully illustrated. Fun reference, great keepsake. Softcovers $40, dust-jacketed hardcover with limitation plate $200. To order, contact ivan@pbagalleries.com or visit: https://www.pbagalleries.com/content/comics/. R. Crumb says, "I found [PBA's catalogue] so interesting that I am saving it for the texts that accompany the comics which were put up for auction. This is some of the best commentary I’ve yet seen on the quality of the content of comic books. I especially enjoyed the reviews of the post-war horror comics. Great. Priceless." Consignments welcome for PBA's Spring 2021 Comic Book sale. Pre-Code Horror, Golden Age and Silver Age comics, original art and ephemera sought. Send inquiries to ivan@pbagalleries.com.
