First Edition, “Authorized Edition.” For the first print run, Scribner's issued 3,000 copies in wrappers and 1,250 copies in cloth. It is uncertain from which binding this copy originates and precedes the London edition by four days. "Like Shelley's Frankenstein, this is an updating of the Faust theme which speculates on the dangers of science out of control...Stevenson's theme of the human mind fragmenting into mutually exclusive, mutually destructive bits has been treated by countless later writers" – Lilly 21; Beinecke 346; Prideaux 17; McKay 348. Lot Amendments Condition: Joints split, shelf wear, rubbing, spine ends a bit chipped, faint insect wear to cloth (a bit more to back cover); ownership signature of Ellen Williams Hall dated 1897; internally near fine, binding just good, worthy of repair.
