A collection of 239 engravings, finely bound in contempooray morocco, the collection including: STRAET, Jan van der. America Retectio . [Antwerp]: Phillipe Galle, [c. 1585]. Oblong folio. 3 (of 4) engraved plates (211 x 281 mm). by Adriaen Collaert after van der Straet, featuring Amerigo Vespucci, Christopher Columbus, and Ferdinand Magellan respectively, each aboard ship enroute to the New World, with sea nymphs, monsters, and other mythological creatures depicted in the surrounding ocean. Condition: bottom margins reinforced, bound without the engraved title "America Revealed" is work rarley found on the market. Engraved title with small illustrations of the discoveries ( reperta ) depicted in greater detail in the first 10 plates, includes : Columbus landing in America; an observatory; a gun foundry; a printing press; a clockmaker's; medical care; a distillery; silk manufacturing; a farrier's; a water mill; windmills; an oil press; a sugar factory; a painter's studio; an optician's; ship navigation (longitude); an armory; an astrolabe as demonstrated by Amerigo Vespucci; and finally a copperplate engraver's studio. Condition: marginal finger soiling and foxing, not affecting images, 8 3/4 inch vertical tears affecting plates 4 and 5 with old but unobtrusive repairs on recto. first edition. Engraved title-page and 16 (of 18) engraved plates (287 x 218 mm) by Adriaen Collaert and Jean Boch after van der Straet depicting musical scenes from the bible, and featuring contemporary (i.e. 16th century) musical instruments, this work is also notable for containing two of the earliest engravings featuring open books of music (title and plate 17). Condition: portion of the lower margins with old tape reinforcement, wholly unaffecting images, few small vertical tears, also outside images, along the lower margins of a few of the plates, bound without the letterpress preface and plates 1 and 2. first edition. Rare. OLC lists only 3 holdings and no copies have appeared at auction in the preceding 30 years. Contemporary full red morocco, elaborately tooled with foliate and double-fillet gilt borders, the sixth border comprising pictorial stamps (cornucopiae, arrows & quivers, and stylized faces) linked by a catenated roll pattern, upper cover with rectangular centerpiece inlay, also of red morocco, with foliate and double-fillet border, and the contents of the album in Latin lettered in gilt , lower cover with an ovular centerpiece inlay of red morocco, featuring gilt ecclesiastical arms, spine with six raised bands and elaborately tooled in gilt in compartments, board edges and turn-ins gilt, edges dyed blue. Condition: expertly rebacked retaining original spine, some light wear to board edges, ties lacking. The remaining suites of plates [V.p.: 1573-1621] are comprised of mainly biblical subjects (though there are a few hunt or military scences). Some of the engravers include: Jan Sadeler after Antonia Tempesta, Martin de Vos, Jan van der Straet and Jan Bassan; Peter Servout after Corelius Martens Maesouck; Wolfgang Kiltian after Mathias Kagerand Jaspac Isac after Antonio Tempesta and P.
