FIRST EDITION OF BARTRAM'S JOURNAL, Stork's Account is the second issue of the first edition with a new title-page, published six months later. John Bartram the first American-born botanist, recorded in his Journal observations of indigenous plants, animals, climate, soil, etc., taken during a 400-mile trip with his son from St. Augustine up and down the St. John's River. "Nothing missed Bartram's eye--tree, flower, fruit, bird, fish, or mineral, and as he went he prepared a map of the river's course and depths, shoals, and currents" ( DAB ). His detailed descriptions "complement Stork's promotional account, and both are among the most important sources for the history of East Florida" (Streeter sale). In the opinion of Linnaeus, Bartram was the greatest contemporary "natural botanist" in the world. His account was influential in promoting English settlement in East Florida (ceded to Great Britain by Spain after the French and Indian War).
