STOEFFLER, Johannes (1452-1531). Elucidatio fabricae ususque astrolabii . Oppenheim: Jacob Kbel, 1513. 2 (260 x 202mm). Colophon dated 1512. Woodcut architectural title border, woodcut coat-of-arms of George Simler, woodcut printer's device at end, 19 large woodcut diagrams, extension slips to those on A6, B3, C4 and D3, 15 woodcuts illustrating measurement and perspective, 6 smaller woodcuts in the text and 5 astrological charts. (Some light spotting, stain at hinge, some browning.) Early 20th-century red speckled pasteboard, spine label, red speckled edges (lightly rubbed at extremities). Provenance : a few early annotations (trimmed); Samuel V. Hoffman (flyleaf inscription dated 1938 with price, $58, given to:); New York Historical Society (sale Christie's, 12 November 1975, lot 120); British Rail Pension Fund (sale Sotheby's, 27 September 1988, lot 214). The most comprehensive treatise on the astrolabe of its time. Stffler ends his work with a discussion of perspective and measurement. 'Stffler recognized that, in mapping, computation of the distance between two places whose latitude and longitude were known failed to take into account the convergence of the meridians' (Stillwell).
