Woodcut architectural title border, woodcut coat-of-arms of Georg Simler, woodcut printer's device at end, 19 large woodcut diagrams, extension slips to those on B3, C4 and D3, 15 woodcuts illustrating measurement and perspective, 6 smaller woodcuts in the text and 5 astrological charts, numerous 3-12 line woodcut initials. (Title becoming loose, without extension slip A6, some light marginal browning.) Contemporary blind-tooled calf, remnants of brass clasps and corner-pieces (some light chipping and splitting to spine). Provenance : early price inscription on title, 14 brabant stuivers; armorial bookplate with motto: "Vix ea nostra voco;" acquired from Lathrop C. Harper, 1961. FIRST EDITION. The most comprehensive treatise on the astrolabe of its time. Stöffler ends his work with a discussion of perspective and measurement. "Stöffler recognized that, in mapping, computation of the distance between two places whose latitude and longitude were known failed to take into account the convergence of the meridians" (Stillwell). This work is printed at the first press at Oppenheim and is one of the rarest books from that press. The poem by Melanchthon on ** 6 v is probably the reformer's first appearance in print.
