STIEGLITZ, ALFRED, photographer . Autograph letter signed ("Al") to Frank J. Hermann [evidently an artist], n.p. ["An American Place," 509 Madison Avenue, New York], 9 February 1930. 2 pages, folio, BOLDLY WRITTEN in dark ink, ON THE VERSOS OF TWO LITHOGRAPHIC FLYERS FOR EXHIBITIONS of paintings by John Marin and Georgia O'Keefe (Stieglitz's spouse since 1924), with large envelope addressed by Stieglitz, all double matted with a photographic portrait, framed and glazed (unexamined out of frame). A fine letter: "The Place [his new Gallery, "An American Place"] is going full blast. Creating a real sensation. As did the [John] Marin Show. And Georgia's [i.e., Georgia O'Keefe's paintings] are creating quite a battle. I wish you could see it. All Parisians & Germans come & are amazed. In spite of Wall Street Marin did well....-- a man bought one for $4000 & a woman offered him $8000 cash a few hours later!! Georgia I fear won't do much. Her things are a bit too daring this year. It's great to be able to move about a bit & not be cooped up like at [his former gallery] 303. Thanks for the beautiful [Paul] Klee and I hope you have found all the girls OK....I had been talking about you the day before & saying your birthday was tomorrow. So the postal was doubly welcome. I wonder whether Europe fascinates you more than this our U.S.A.. Time is flying and Spring is knocking at the door....News there is none whatever. Georgia is happy....Harmony reigns. And that is much. And Wall St. frowns a bit less...." As a postscript, Stieglitz adds: "I wonder do you paint[?]"
