STEVENSON, Robert Louis. Autograph manuscript, a draft table of contents for his Ballads (published 1890). N.p., [ca. 1890]. 1 page, 4to, in pencil on a sheet of lined paper, the verso with five lines of verse ("My fancy gaze, and see again...") and several lists of rhymes, the sheet neatly inlaid. . STEVENSON'S DRAFT TABLE OF CONTENTS FOR 'BALLADS' Although Stevenson's reputation rests on his novels in particular, his poetry, especially the collection A Child's Garden of Verses (1885) has remained of enduring popularity. Here, Stevenson has roughed out the contents of the collection published as Ballads in 1890. At the top, beneath the heading "Ballads," he lists: Ticonderoga The Feast of Famine Xmas at Sea Mary A Tale of the Bell Rock Lord Elvanfort(?)." The first three works are listed again beneath, with numbers to the right, probably Stevenson's rough calculation of the number of pages those works would occupy. At the top right of the sheet, Stevenson has added a small drawing of a mountainous island. Interestingly, when it was published, Ballads contained a poem not noted here 'The Song of Rahero" (a South Sea subject), "The Feast of Famine," Ticonderoga: A Legend of the West Highlands," "Heather Ale: A Galloway Legend," and Christmas at Sea." Three of the works listed in the draft contents, but omitted from the published collection, "Mary," "The Tale of the Bell Rock" and "Lord Elvanfort" are not readily identifiable.
