STEINBECK, John. The Pastures of Heaven. New York: Brewer, Warren & Putnam, 1932. 8 o. Original green cloth (endpapers slightly browned near hinges); silver dust jacket (slightest wear to edges, otherwise very fine). Provenance : Paul Jordan-Smith, literary critic and collector (presentation inscription and bookplate); Jacke E. Gindi (his sale, Christie's East, 20 April 1994, lot 86). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE of Steinbeck's rare second book. PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY STEINBECK on the front free endpaper: "Again for Paul Jordan Smith John Steinbeck an afternoon in Los Gatos." The remainder were sold by Brewer, Warren & Putnam to Robert O. Ballou for re-issue. Although not a commercial success for Steinbeck, it does reveal his narrative abilities and emotive talents that would come to fruition later in the decade in Of Mice and Men and The Grapes of Wrath . IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY, inscribed to his early supportor, Paul Jordan-Smith (see previous lot). With publisher's photograph portrait of Steinbeck laid in. Goldstone and Payne A2a.
