STEINBECK, JOHN. 1902-1968. Tortilla Flat. New York: Covici Friede, 1935.
8vo. Publisher's printed wrappers, glassine jacket. Very fine copy, in custom chemise slipcase.
Provenance: Jean Hersholt (label to interior of chemise identifying this volume as number 527); collection of David Heyler; by descent.
FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, OF STEINBECK'S FIRST GREAT SUCCESS, likely issued in advance of publication.
A lovely copy with Hollywood association. Jean Hersholt (1886-1956) was a Danish-American actor who appeared in Erich von Stroheim's Greed (1924) and co-starred with Shirley Temple in Heidi (1937). In addition to his bibliophilic activities, he was an avid philanthropist. The Motion Picture Academy of Arts and Sciences Jean Hersholt Award, given every year to a member for "outstanding contributions to humanitarian causes," is named in his honor.
Among David Heyler's correspondence with book dealers, we found a letter from Marguerite Cohn dated March 11, 1954, alerting him to the upcoming sale of Jean Hersholt's books at Parke-Bernet Galleries, March 23-24, 1954. Heyler instead had one of the Dawson brothers bid for him. Tucked into Cohn's letter is a copy of a receipt from Dawson's Book Shop for the purchase of "Moon is Down $27.50 / Tortilla Flat $17.50 / Jean Hersholt Auction," along with the original Parke Bernet bookmark. Goldstone & Payne A4a; Morrow 28.
