Albumen photograph by Stockton, California photographer B.P. Batchelder, hand stamped by the artist on verso and inked in the recto margin "S. and S.F. Packet Co's Steamer 'T.C. Walker' leaving Stockton on her special trip to San Francisco. Monday, August 2nd, 1886. / 20th National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic"; 7.625 x 9.375 in. (print) on a 9.375 x 10.875 in. mount. T.C. Walker was a respected pilot on the San Joaquin River who went on to become president of the California Steamship Company. Two ships were named after him during his lifetime, the one in the photograph being the first, which was built in 1868 and ran between San Francisco and Stockton for 30 years before exploding in what the New York Times called "the most disastrous accident in the history of Stockton." Condition: Toning to print and mount. Vertical crease in right portion of print, plus short vertical area of separation/damage running through bottom center of print. Inked inscription clear and legible. Loss to mount, especially at edges.
