STATUTES OF BARGA concerning the gabelle, in Latin, MANUSCRIPT ON PAPER Barga, 26 February 1346 Chancery 2° (300 x 200mm). 28 leaves (of 30, lacking 1 leaf before f.1 and its conjugate after f.24, the latter with loss of text), 1 2 8 , original foliation: [2], xxiv, [2], vertical margins ruled in lead, justification: ca. 220 x 110mm, single columns of 30-40 lines, written in brown ink in a gothic cursive script (lacking the final leaf of text, browned, frayed with substantial loss to margins of first and last leaves, waterstains in upper margins, pen trials and miscellaneous notes on first and last leaves, several leaves separating along previous folds, most leaves strengthened at inner margin with blue paper). 16th-century vellum over pasteboard, remains of two pairs of tawed leather ties (lacking the front free endpaper), modern green morocco box. PROVENANCE: The manuscript was written in 1346 by the notary Neri ser Petri de Monte Alcino: inscription, f.1: 'scripta per me Nerium ser Petri de Monte Alcino ... notarium et scribam publicum ... sub annis domini Millesimo III XLVI. Indictione XIIIIa, die XXVI, mensis Februarii secundum consuetudinum et cursum notariorum provincie Carfagnane.' CONTENTS: The present manuscript offers a unique early witness to the economic life of the 14th century in the Garfagnana, a region of Tuscany. Barga, a town north of Lucca and northwest of Florence, came under the domination of Florence in 1340. In 1346 these statutes were drawn up for the purpose of regulating the taxation of commerce in the territory of Barga and neighboring localities, a number of which are named in the prologue. The 49 chapters concern both internal and external trade in a variety of products: cloth of various kinds and from various sources; hides; many kinds of objects made of iron, steel, tin, lead or brass; wood, worked or unworked, for various designated purposes; foodstuffs, including cheese and fish; vessels of glass and clay; building materials such as plaster, tiles and marble; oil and wine; horses; domestic animals and servants; grain and other agricultural products, including herbs and spices. For each of these the amount of tax, or gabelle, is specified, as well as the conditions under which duty must be paid on trade in each item. Particular attention is also given to defining weights and measures and to regulations concerning the retail sale of wine, bread and oil. No other copy is known of these statutes, and the standard bibliographies of Italian statutes include no listings for Barga.
