Engraved title-vignette, 31 engraved plates, one of these folding, engraved head- and tailpieces. (Some spotting, mostly in the plate margins.) Contemporary diced russia by Ph. Selenka with his ticket, sides panelled in gilt and blind with a broad frame, sprinkled edges (lower edges rubbed). FIRST EDITION, IN A HANDSOME BINDING BY SELENKA. Rare: not in Blackmer. The temple of Apollo the Healer, reputedly built by Ictinus, was discovered only in 1812. Its friezes, now in the British Museum, depict two important mythological battles: the Greeks against the Amazons and against the Centaurs. Stackelberg toured Greece and Asia Minor between 1810 and 1816, and worked with Cockerell at Bassae, and with Byron, von Hallerstein, Gropius and others at various sites.
