London: W. Clowes & Sons for John Murray 1861. 8° (223 x 140mm). Wood-engraved title vignette, 1 folding lithographic map, 1 folding wood-engraved frontispiece, 27 wood-engraved plates, 45 wood-engraved illustrations. (Light spotting to frontispiece, endpapers and folding map.) Original brown cloth, blocked in gilt and blind (recased with repairs to head and foot of spine and inner hinges). Provenance : John Hanning Speke (author's presentation inscription 'To Captain Speke with the Author's kind compliments P. B. Du Chaillu London, July 17th 1863'). IMPORTANT PRESENTATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF THE AUTHOR'S FIRST WORK; this copy presented to Speke about a month after his triumphant return to Britain with the news of the discovery of the source of the Nile.
