Drop-head title, imprint at foot of pp.19. (Browned, old vertical crease throughout.) Modern red morocco-backed boards, spine gilt. Provenance : Royal Geographical Society (inscribed by the author at head of page 1 'To Secretary Royal Geographical Society London', with autograph marginal note on p.1, author's signature on p.19, and a note in an unidentified hand on final page '1861 Capt. J.H. Speke Recd. Jan. 25th'); Alfred Gordon Brown (Cape Town, manuscript note by Quentin Keynes, noting that he bought the present work from him and that 'he had had it in his collection for many years'). PRESENTATION COPY OF THIS VERY RARE PAMPHLET, PRINTED IN CAPE TOWN. Probably one of a handful of examples sent out by Speke. The text was later incorporated into Speke's What led to the discovery of the source of the Nile (Edinburgh and London: 1864) as pages 155-190.
