SPEED, John (1552-1629). The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine . London: 1614. 4 parts in one volume, 2° (420 x 298mm). Engraved architectural title in pt. I, engraved armorial plate by Hondius dated 1614 on verso of list of Kingdoms, full-page woodcut Royal arms in each part, printed titles in parts II-IV, 66 double-page engraved maps including 47 of England and the adjacent islands, 14 of Wales and 5 of Ireland, after Christopher Saxton, John Norden William White William Smith and Thomas Durham, engraved by Hondius and others. (Lacking the map of Scotland, title with some marginal losses just into engraved image, last index leaf defective due to damp and other index leaves stained, books II-IV with light dampstaining.) Contemporary calf (large patch worn from lower cover, extremities rubbed). Provenance : 'IC' -- early gilt initials on upper cover -- John Murray 1st Duke of Atholl (1660-1724, engraved armorial bookplate dated 1711 and ink ownership inscription 'Tullibardine' in lower margin of title).
