Title: Special Attack Flotilla: Bushido in the War of Greater East Asia. - Japanese midget subs in the attack on Pearl Harbor Author: Place: Tokyo Publisher: Japan Times Press Date: 1942 Description: [xx], 82, [1] pp. Illustrations from photographs. 30x21 cm (11¾x8¼") original gilt-lettered black cloth, string bound. First, and only, edition. Very rare volume of Japanese propaganda, curiously published in English at the height of the battle for the Pacific in World War II. A tribute to the nine Japanese sailors who launched an undersea attack on the United States fleet at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, December 7, 1941 in a "Special Attack Flotilla" of two-man "midget" submarines. None of them returned alive. The sailors were treated as heroes and the text is nothing short of worshipful of the "Hero Gods". Includes a fantastic account of the attack, biographies of each of the crew members and skippers, the text of their final letters to their families, an interview of the Japanese Chief of the Naval Press Section of the Imperial Headquarters by Japanese novelist Eiji Yoshikawa and more. The closing text advises: "The end of the War of Greater East Asia is still far off. In order to gain a final victory, the present total war must be fought with unflagging energy to a finish, and for this purpose the nation must form an even firmer resolution to gain complete mastery of all seas." OCLC/WorldCat locates only 6 copies (3 in the United States). Lot Amendments Condition: Fading and light wear to cloth; very good. Item number: 259751
