A collection of eleven bound manuscripts with additional unbound or loose manuscripts of patents of nobility, civil deeds and registers from Colonial Peru.
Various cities, (Lima, Chuquisaca, Arequipa, Zamora…) c.1573-c.1729]. Folio, modern pencil foliation to 390. Most uncut, sized (315 x 218 mm). Written in brown ink in varying secretarial hands and arranged in chronological order, headed by typed descriptions, in Spanish. Bearing dates, numerous signatures and stamps of eminent persons in colonial Peru. Modern half calf over marbled paper boards, gilt title to spine on morocco lettering label. Condition : few edges trimmed, slight worming affecting some leaves of the text, toned, worn at edges, some tears, intermittent stains, some areas of ink faded; extremities lightly worn. [With:] [Peru:] 1557 and n.d., 68½pp and 7pp., respectively. One unbound document and several loose leaves in varying hands, likely registers from the founding political system of Peru. Condition : creases, light dampstains, most severe to one leaf, some wear at edges. In 1529, Spanish Conquistador Francisco Pizarro obtained permission from the Monarchy to conquer the land called Peru and overthrow the Incas. Pizarro sets up the first establishment amongst the weakened lands and ultimately suffers a recapture by the Spanish. In the aftermath of the many years of civil wars, sackings and captures, the colony needed to consolidate its royal authority from Spain. Pizarro founds the city of Lima (or La Ciudad de Los Reyes) in 1535 from which the political and administrative institutions were thus organized. an important collection from colonial peru . The bound collection comprising of four patents of nobility and seven civil deeds or family land grants from colonial Peru. The manuscripts documenting major Spanish colonial cities and important deeds that demonstrate Spanish influence and correspondence. Many such documents having been witnessed at The Royal Audience, established by the Spanish as their appellate court in Lima in 1543. The present manuscripts are contemporary to the colony as it began to establish an organized political system and maintain a standardized economy. The documents pertain to the colonial inhabitant’s interest in bequests, grants and their status within the system. A full list of contents is available on request.
