Collation: 1 (in 6s, lacking ii); 2 (in 7s); 3 (in 9s, lacking i); 4-5 (in 8s); 6-7 (in 7s, lacking iii); 8 (in 8s); 9 (in 7s, lacking i); 10 (in 4s, lacking iv); 11-14 (in 8s); 15 (in 4s); 16-17 (in 8s); 18-19 (in 5s, lacking iii); last 2 leaves halved (+ iv vellum flyleaves). 20 lines written in black ink faded brown in a gothic bookhand between two verticals, ruled in red, justification: 103 x 75mm., rubrics in red, numerous one-line initials alternately of blue with red penwork flourishing and of burnished gold flourished black, numerous two-line initials of burnished gold on grounds with infills of pink and blue with white decoration, 16 large eight-line initials with full-page borders ; initials in blue or red, on burnished gold ground, infilled with colored flowers in trefoil sprays and branchwork, some in interlace design, three-quarter borders made up of colored acanthus leaves predominantly in pink, blue, green and a reddish-orange, enlivened with naturalistic flowers and hairline tendrils of gold leaves and circular disks, interspersed are various figures and fantastical creatures including an axeman, monkeys, peacocks, a collared dog, a reindeer, lions and bears. one full-page miniature of christ in the garden of gethsemane (f.22v). Christ kneels on a fenced-in mound looking towards a chalice, three nimbed disciples are sleeping in the foreground, in the distance soldiers approach carrying spears and wearing helmets, led by Judas carrying a money sack. Late 19th-century dark brown morocco, covers blind stamped with central cartouche and roll tooling, spine stamped and lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, modern brown cloth-covered box. Condition: 15 leaves excised of mostly full page miniatures, occasional smudging to text, some darkening and staining to the vellum, slight cropping to some borders not affecting imagery, some minor tears with the last nine leaves repaired at the bottom right corner; light surface wear, spine rubbed with some loss of gilt.
