Bei den «Unguentaria« oder «Balsamaria» handelt es sich um kleinformatige, polychrome Glasfläschchen. Sie dienten der Aufbewahrung von Duftölen und Parfums und gehörten somit zur luxuriösen Ausstattung eines jeden gehobenen Haushalts im Römischen Reich. Auch als Grabbeigaben waren die durch ihre auffälligen Farben und Formen hervorstechenden Flakons üblich.

Late antique unguentarium
Eastern Mediterranean probably 5th - 7th C. AD. Dark blue, thick walled glass. Narrow foot, tubular body with spiral ribs, shoulder handles. Mounted on acrylic glass base. Restored cracks.
H (without base) 10, W 4,5 cm.
The "Unguentaria" or "Balsamaria" are small-format, polychrome glass vials. They were used to store fragrant oils and perfumes and thus belonged to the luxurious furnishings of every upscale household in the Roman Empire. The flacons, which stood out for their striking colours and shapes, were also common as grave goods.
