The Emory map with one browned panel where bound, minor toning and some chips to margins, a few small splits at fold corners within image but fine overall given its size, some spotting to plates and text but most plates generally very clean, a very fine grouping of documents and maps. The very large Emory map, depicting the route of his Army of the West from Fort Leavenworth to San Diego is described by Wheat as "a document of towering significance in the cartographic history of the West." The Abert map is considered the most detailed survey of New Mexico from the period. The plates include early views of San Diego and Santa Fe, plans of the battles at Los Angeles, San Pasqual and Rio San Gabriel, and fine depictions of Native Americans and their camps.
