Southern German Painter

Schätzpreis
Zuschlagspreis:
n. a.
Beschreibung:

Southern German Painter Three Marys at the Sepulchre, initial 'V' on a leaf from an Antiphonal on vellum, southern Germany, c.1470-90 A rich and vibrant leaf from a huge Antiphonal, painted in the quintessential Augsburg style. 573 x 382mm. The initial 'V' opening 'Vespere autem sabbati' for Easter Saturday, 10 lines of text and music on a five-line stave, rubrics in red, capitals touched in red, 8 initials in red or blue (one including a face peering out of a hood on the verso). Mounted and framed. Provenance: (1) Robert Forrer (1866-1947), Swiss archaeologist, art historian, collector, and director of the Archaeological Museum of Strasbourg from 1909 to 1939; with his usual ink stamp (Lugt, Marques, no 941a), very faded at the lower right corner, below the final line of text. The present leaf is apparently not included in the two published volumes of Forrer’s collection of manuscript leaves and cuttings (1902, 1907), suggesting that he acquired it after 1907. Although not a dealer, Forrer supplemented his income and helped to fund his archaeological digs by forming and then selling various collections of medieval and Renaissance items: in 1899, for example, the Victoria & Albert Museum bought from him a collection of 1200 pieces of textile. For a detailed biography, see Bernadette Schnitzler, Robert Forrer, 1866-1947: archéologue, écrivain et antiquaire, Strasbourg, 1999. (2) Esther Rosenbaum (d. 1980) of Chicago: sold with the rest of her collection at Sotheby’s, April 25, 1983, lot 146. Illumination: This initial, with its strong palette of blue, red and green, and with punching to the gold-leaf background, is a product of one of the manuscript ateliers which flourished in Augsburg at the end of the 15th century. There are similarities with the export-oriented work of Johann Bämler (c.1430‒1503) and workshop, which had its own printing press from 1472 onwards (see, for example, a Psalter at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek, BSB-Hss Cgm 82, datable to c.1484). Provenance Robert Forrer (1866-1947) Esther Rosenbaum (d.1980)
