Partly printed document signed as President, Granada, 31 October 1856, 1 page, oblong 8vo, accomplished in manuscript, pasted down , "The Republic of Nicaragua is indebted to E. S. Hardy in the sum of [$50]...for Military Services rendered to the State..." -- JOSÉ ANTONIO PÁEZ, Venezuelan soldier and political leader . Autograph letter signed to Henry Clay, n.p., n.d., 1 page, 8vo, integral blank, tipped to a larger sheet, in Spanish, declining an inviation. Together 2 items . William Walker (1824-1860) was elected President of the Republic of Nicaragua, after joining a revolutionary faction there in 1856. He was ousted by a coalition of Central American powers, but returned to South America by 1860, where he was captured by a British naval officer in Honduras. He was subsequently court-martialed, convicted and shot. José Antonio Páez (1790-1873) led a revolt against Símon Bolívar in 1829 and became the first President of the new Republic of Venezuela; he then established himself as dictator until 1846. After leading another revolt, Páez was exiled in 1847, but returned to Venezuela as dictator in 1861. He was forced to resign and went into final exile in 1863. (3)
