A VERY RARE AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT MAP, THE ONLY STATE OF THE EARLIEST LARGE-SCALE MAP OF SOUTH AMERICA, and the sole example made by the Lafreri School. It is one of the greatest works by the Veronese engraver and cartographer Paolo Forlani, who collaborated with several of Venice's most eminant mapmakers, making him the common link between the city's most important workshops. Beautifully engraved, the image embraces the Antilles of the Caribbean, and the entire South American continent, featuring the Amazon Basin and the exaggerated swell of the River Plate estuary. To the south, bordering the Strait of Magellan, appears an outsized Tierra del Fuego. Tooley:1939 no.93, Woodward:1990 no.11, Woodward:1996 watermark 129.
