SOLINUS, Caius Julius. Polyhistor rerum toto orbe memorabilium thesaurus locupletissimus. - MELA, Pomponius. De orbis situ libri tres. Basel: Michael Isingrin and Heinrich Petri, 1538. 2 parts in one volume, 2° (320 x 200 mm). 2 double-page woodcut maps and 18 woodcut maps or topographical views in text, COLORED BY A CONTEMPORARY HAND. (Title defective, both double-page maps and r3 torn and repaired, some occasional minor worming, light browning and staining.) Contemporary half blind tooled pigskin and wooden boards, two brass clasps (leather of clasps renewed, minor repairs to spine ends, minor worming). Provenance : some early marginalia. FIRST EDITION, edited by Sebastian Münster. Münster is likely the cartographer for the "Asia Maior" folding map which contains "THE EARLIEST REPRESENTATION OF THE NORTH-WEST COAST OF AMERICA ON A PRINTED MAP" (Burden). It takes the form of a land mass in the upper right corner labeled "Terra Incognita," and depicts a small bay, trees, and hills. Burden further notes that the Asia Maior map shows one of the first delineations of a strait between Asia and America, some two hundred years before Bering's voyages to the region. Burden 11; BMC/STC German p.818. [ Bound with :] ARISTOTLE (384-322 B.C.) Contenta Ethicorum …. Translated by Leonardus Brunus Aretinus. Freiburg: Joannes Faber, 1541. 2°. Woodcut printer’s device on title. (Some light browning and staining, margin of D4 repaired affecting a few letters, some worming, mostly towards end, affecting some letters.) Later edition. Known to the Middle Ages in various 13th-century translations, the text was also influential in the Renaissance because of its secular approach to human and political relationships. Leonardus Brunus Aretinus (1374-1444) new translations was intended to set a humanistic standard for elegant style and philological accuracy. VD16 A 3418.
