Interesting series of letters discussing political matters, Indian affairs, and other topics. A few excerpts - On Jan. 11, 1828: “In the states where the old administration party have the upper hand, they exercise their power without mercy, where they have it not they intrigue to get it by dividing our ranks. Under these circumstances must we not take care of our friends? Must we not adopt Jefferson’s policy?...” On Jan. 22, no year: “Mr. Doherty is appointed your successor. I had applications from Kennerly, Pilcher, Doherty, and Ashley (through a friend) for my influence on their behalf. My influence, I know to be less than nothing…” On April 12, 1830: “…A Bill has passed the Senate for holding an Indian Treaty in Indiana… I have placed your name on file for the appt of commissioner. Mr. Choteau will also inform you what passed before the President on the subject of a commission to the Indians who are at war with each other in the upper Mppi but Capt. Smith had been already appointed to that duty…” (this letter with 1x½” burn hole). On Dec. 10th, no year: “I think probable that agents will be appointed to reside constantly among the remote Indian tribes. I would wish to have your opinion about it, naming the nations with whom such a measure would be desirable. What nation or nations would you take?...” This with a small hole. Also present is a carte-de-visite photograph of Benton, and an envelope addressed by Benton with a signed note. Provenance: Descended in the Benjamin O’Fallon family.
