London: John Churchill, 1847. 8 o (211 x 134 mm). Half-title. 1 full-page and 2 smaller wood-engraved illustrations on pp. 17-18. (Light soiling and one or two trifling marginal tears to half-title and last page.) Stab-stitched as issued, unbound; folding cloth case (slightly worn). Provenance : Robert Reynolds Macintosh (b. 1897), English anesthesiologist, co-inventor of the Oxford ether vaporizer, co-author of several textbooks and manuals of anesthesiology, published in the 1940s (bookplate). SUPERB ASSOCIATION COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION OF SNOW'S PRINCIPAL WORK ON ETHER. Soon after publishing a first brief description of his ether inhaler (see preceding lot), Snow modified its design. Snow's "division of the stages of anesthesia into five degrees was not improved upon until the work of Arthur Guedel in 1917" (DSB). VERY RARE. Garrison-Morton 5658; Norman 1966.
