A South African attorney, military man and politician, Jan Christian Smuts (1870 - 1950) served as a member of the British War Cabinet in World War I and was one of the authors of the Covenant of the League of Nations. In 1945, after again serving the Allies in World War II, Smuts is credited with writing the preamble to the Charter of the United Nations. He became the Prime Minister of South Africa in 1919 and again in 1939. Royal Doulton backstamp.
