Later vellum, possibly 18th-century (light soiling and light spotting). Provenance : Stepan Gavrilovich Tobolin (17th-century inscription and marginalia) -- J.A. Lundell (bookplate) -- Uppsala University (stamp and de-accession ticket). Third (First Moscow) edition of THE FIRST FUNDAMENTAL GRAMMAR IN RUSSIA, UKRAINE AND BELARUS. Smotritskii's codification of Church Slavonic had a momentous impact on literary usage throughout Slavonic countries, and Lomonosov described it as 'the gates to learning'. This edition adds for the first time a preface discussing the usefulness of Grammar, suggesting the formation of a committee to ensure uniform usage, and including comments by Maksim Grek. The copy in the State Lenin Library is also without leaf A1. Apparently not in the New York Public Library, nor at Harvard. Sopikov 223 ('RARE'); Zernova 206.
