SMITH, William (1769-1839). Synopsis of Geological Phenomena . Oxford: printed by S. Collingwood, 22 June 1832. Broadside (523 x 383mm), sometime mounted onto linen. SMITH, William (1769-1839). Synopsis of Geological Phenomena . Oxford: printed by S. Collingwood, 22 June 1832. Broadside (523 x 383mm), sometime mounted onto linen. (Left-hand edge irregularly trimmed, extremities with very minor light dust-soiling and minor soiling, folded horizontally and twice vertically, light central crease with loss of one or two letters.) EXTREMELY RARE SUMMARY OF SMITH'S GEOLOGICAL THOUGHTS TOWARDS THE END OF HIS LIFE. The present work was published in the same year as the second volume of Lyell's Principles of Geology , but the conclusions could not be more different. Here, Smith takes geological evidence as 'Illustrative Effects of the Deluge', and suggests that a Noachian flood came from the sea from the north. ONLY FOUR OTHER COPIES CAN BE LOCATED: Geological Society of London, Natural History Museum, the William Smith collection at Oxford, and Leeds. BM(NH) IV p.1951; Eyles 39.
