London: printed for William Wilcox, 1757. 4 o (250 x 197 mm). Copper engraved folding plate "The South View of Oswego on Lake Ontario" (plate with marginal repairs laid down, some light browning). Late 19th-century polished calf gilt by F. Bedford, covers with border of gilt tripple-fillet, spine in six compartments with raised bands, gilt lettered in, gilt edges (chipping to upper spine end). Provenance: Almon W. Griswold (1833-1890) collector of American history, bibliography, English literature and the classics (his sale, "Gems from the Library of a Bibliomaniac," Bangs and Leavitt, March 1876, lot 786, note signed "O.G." tipped in); Ogden Goelet (1851-1897) collector of Americana and 19th-century English literature (bookplate); John W. Whiteley (bookplate). FIRST EDITION OF "THE FIRST AND CLASSIC HISTORY OF NEW YORK," (Streeter): a cornerstone of colonial history. William Smith a Loyalist who graduated from Yale in 1745, became the justice of the province of New York but left the country after the Revolution for Lower Canada where he became chief justice. Smith's work was based "chiefly on the Provincial Laws, the Minutes of the Council, the Journals of the General Assembly and other government records. He also acknowledges his indebtedness to Colden's History of the Five Indian nations, and to Charlevoix. The history proper covers pp. 1-180, while a description of the province, geographical, political, etc., forms pp. 181-255" (Sabin). Chruch 1023; Howes S703; Sabin 84566.
