Bedford for Henry Stevens (some staining). Provenance : Samuel Latham Mitchill Barlow (bookplate); Robert Goelet (bookplate); John W. Whiteley, Jr. (bookplate). FIRST AMERICAN EDITION of one of the best accounts of the early years of the French and Indian War. It was first printed at London in 1757. The book is largely a vindication of General Shirley, and much of the information was supplied by his secretary, William Alexander The part relating to the Lake George campaign of 1755 is important contemporary source material. McAnear attributes authorship to William Smith; DAB to William Livingston Smith and John Morin Scott. It was first printed in London the previous year. RARE: according to American Book Prices Current no copies of the first American edition have appeared at auction in at least 30 years. Evans 8163; Howes L401; Sabin 41650.
