Folding map linen-backed repairing a long tear, some chipping to backstrip and sunning to boards. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION and the first containing the two plates after Benjamin West depicting Bouquet's negotiations with the Indians and their delivery of English prisoners to him. The large map was re-engraved for this edition. Streeter called the first printing "probably the most detailed map of the Ohio region up to that time." Bouquet's successful expedition and quashing of the Pontiac conspiracy opened the Ohio Valley to further exploration and settlement. This copy inscribed "Benjamin West / 1766" on upper cover and "design'd by B. West" on title. Field 1442; Howes S693 ("c"); Sabin 84617; Vail 572.
