Smith") being a fair copy of the lyrics to "America" ["My Country 'Tis of Thee"], 2 pp, 8vo, July 15, 1891, laid down to mat and framed with a souvenir cabinet card signed, dampstaining to margin of second page, folding creases. Provenance: the estate of Sigurd Rognebakke; thence by descent to the present owner. Smith wrote the now canonical, patriotic hymn while a student at Andover Theological Seminary. Though he notes on this copy that the song was "written in 1832, it was actually debuted on the fourth of July, 1831, at a children's celebration in a Boston church, and first published in 1832 (ANB).
