SMITH, John. The Sea-Mans Grammar and Dictionary, explaining all the difficult terms in navigation and the practical navigator and gunner: in two parts , London: printed, and are to be sold by Randal Taylor, 1691. 4, folding engraved plate of a ship titled "A Description of a Ship with all her tackling," woodcut illustrations (margin of plate cleanly torn, browned throughout, stronger to some leaves), contemporary calf (neatly rebacked, extremities rubbed and scuffed). Provenance : William Dent, ownership inscription on verso of title, dated 1693; Arthur Young, bookplate on verso of title. "Smith was the author of several works, but this sea grammar is very rare, being the first of its kind to be compiled for seamen. Originally printed in 1626 under the title "An accidence ... for all young sea-men" it went through several editions. The contents describe the parts of a ship, the technical terms used, duties of ship officers, sea terms and ordnance" (Scott Catalogue 76, 1627 edition). Wing S4124.
