London: Stewart & Murray for Smith, Elder, & Co., [1838]-1849. 5 parts in 3 volumes, 4° (310 x 246mm). Errata slip at front of Reptilia vol., correction slip at front of Mammalia section, five section titles. 279 FINE NUMBERED PLATES (275 LITHOGRAPHIC, 4 ENGRAVED, 1 AQUATINT) MOST BY AND AFTER GEORGE H. FORD, 267 HAND-COLOURED, some heightened with gum arabic, comprising: Mammalia , 52 plates; Aves , 114 plates (plate 6 a hand-coloured aquatint, 113 hand-coloured lithographs); Reptilia , 78 plates (75 hand-coloured); Pisces , 31 plates (26 hand-coloured); Invertebratae , 4 hand-coloured engraved plates after Charles M. Curtis. (Without the 'temporary title' as usual, and the sub-section title 'Illustrations of the Annulosa of South Africa', lower outer corner of plate 17 of the Mammalia torn and repaired, some generally light spotting, and light brown toning to the plates, heavier spotting to the four Invertebratae plates, plate 47 of the Mammalia , plate 111 of the Aves , plates 47, 48 and 78 of the Reptilia .) Red half morocco gilt, bound for Sotheran & Co (rebacked to style, inner hinges repaired). Provenance : Peter Dowding Prankerd (armorial bookplate); Sir David Lionel Goldsmid-Stern-Salomons, Bart. (Broomhill, Tunbridge Wells, Kent, armorial bookplate). A FINE COPY INTERNALLY OF THIS WORK, ORIGINALLY ISSUED IN 28 PARTS AND DESCRIBED BY MENDELSSOHN AS A 'HANDSOME AND VALUABLE WORK'. Giving 'full particulars of the natural history subjects of South Africa collected by Dr. Andrew Smith's expedition' with illustrations by George Ford 'of a very high order.' Plates 18 and 37 in the Mammalia were not published.
