SMELLIE, William (1697-1763). A Sett of Anatomical Tables, with Explanations, and an Abridgement, of the Practice of Midwifery. London: D. Wilson, 1754. 2 o (536 x 365 mm). 39 engraved plates by Grignion after Jan van Rymsdyk and Pieter Camper (light browning.) Contemporary calf (rebacked, some wear to edges). Provenance : Thomas Howard (signature on front paste-down). FIRST EDITION, rare, presumably issued in only 100 copies. "Smellie was the leading forceps practitioner in London, and several of the plates illustrate the use of this instrument in various presentations of the fetus. These engravings are the first accurate anatomical illustrations of the fetus in utero" (Norman).
